A man has been arrested for critically wounding his girlfriend. Police say he attacked her because she started dating someone else.
The Broward man, Damion Matthews, has four children from the woman.
The incident took place in a parking lot in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea on Sunday night, around 9:20pm. The 47-year-old man is in jail without bond and faces an attempted murder charge.
The woman was found bleeding with a deep cut in her neck. People who saw it tried to help her until medical help arrived. Then, she was rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police said that a witness saw Matthews standing near a car’s driver seat and attacking the woman while she was sitting in a jeep. Some people tried to help her. But Matthews ran away in a black Ford Expedition.
After the attack, the man went straight to his friend’s house and told him that he had hurt his ex badly, according to a police statement. His friend told police that he also wished she would survive.
Earlier that day, the man had told his friend he was going to kill the woman because she had found a new partner, according to a police investigation.
Police records show that Matthews has a history with the police. In 2014, he was accused of hurting the same woman when she was pregnant. He argued with her and punched her in the hand, while having a discussion about their kids. The woman also told the court that Matthews had threatened her and her kids and hurt her in the past. She later dropped the case.
It’s not clear if it is the same woman who was wounded in 2014.
